Magic of Mirrors - Activity Plan

Aim

To understand the concepts of reflection, real and virtual images, and how images change with different types of mirrors by research and doing method 

Step 1 – Self-Reflection with Mirrors (A, B, C)

  • Students will come one by one.
  • Pick up Mirror A (Plane Mirror), look at their image, and share their feelings: “I see myself exactly as I am.”
  • Next, Mirror B (Concave Mirror) – observe magnified or diminished image depending on distance.
  • Lastly, Mirror C (Convex Mirror) – observe smaller, wider field of view.

Learning: Different mirrors show different kinds of images (erect, diminished, magnified).

Step 2 – Angle of Mirrors Experiment

  • Take two plane mirrors and change the angle between them.
  • Students observe how the number of images increases.
  • Rule explained: n = 360/θ - 1

Learning: Reflection depends on angle, symmetry creates multiple images.

Step 3 – Demonstration of Real vs Virtual Images

🌟 Unique Method Name: “Candle & Screen Show”

  • Take a concave mirror and place a candle in front.
  • Move a white screen to capture the candle’s image → students see a real inverted image on screen.
  • Let students look directly into the mirror (without screen) → they see a virtual, erect image.

Learning: Real images can be obtained on a screen. Virtual images cannot be caught on a screen, only seen by the eye.

Learning Outcomes

  • Differentiate between plane, concave, and convex mirrors.
  • Understand real vs virtual images.
  • Relate reflection with daily life (rearview mirror, shaving mirror, dressing mirror).

Moral Lesson

Just like mirrors show us different reflections, life also gives us different perspectives.

  • A plane mirror teaches honesty – it shows as we are.
  • A concave mirror teaches focus – things get clearer only at the right distance.
  • A convex mirror teaches broad vision – we must see the bigger picture of life.
