Aim of the Activity
To engage students in experiential learning by building simple models that illustrate the behaviour of light and shadows. The activity links scientific concepts (light travel, shadow formation, timekeeping, eclipses) with creativity, history, and moral lessons — making learning joyful, memorable and value-centred.
Activity Overview
Students were divided into four groups. Each group built and demonstrated one model and connected their demonstration to a short moral message:
- Shadow Puppet Theatre — build a shoebox theatre and perform a short shadow story.
- Sundial — construct a simple gnomon-based sundial and explain time measurement.
- Pinhole Camera — make a pinhole camera to observe inverted images and relate to straight-line travel of light.
- Solar & Lunar Eclipse Model — use balls and a torch to model eclipses and explain Earth–Sun–Moon geometry.

Learning Outcomes
- Explain how light travels in straight lines and how shadows are formed (opaque/translucent/transparent behavior).
- Demonstrate image formation with a pinhole camera and describe why images appear inverted.
- Construct a basic sundial and understand historical methods of timekeeping.
- Model solar and lunar eclipses and differentiate between them using an Earth–Sun–Moon setup.
- Enhance 21st-century skills: teamwork, communication, critical thinking and creative expression.
Moral Lessons
- Shadow Puppet Theatre: Our actions cast “shadows” — choose kindness to spread light.
- Sundial: Value time — time lost cannot be regained; be punctual and responsible.
- Pinhole Camera: Patience and clarity reveal the correct picture — when things look upside-down, perspective helps.
- Eclipses: Darkness is temporary; hope and light return — resilience in the face of difficulty.
